Reading an Air-King Reference: 5500 to 126900

Read a five-digit Air-King like 5500 differently from a six-digit like 116900. The older 34mm pieces carried short references; the modern line runs six digits, where the leading block signals the case and the trailing pair signals bezel and material.

Three generations matter to a buyer. The 114200 (roughly 2007 to 2016) is a 34mm Oystersteel three-hander with a smooth bezel and several dials, including the blue with 3-6-9 numerals. In 2016 the 116900 arrived at 40mm, borrowing the anti-magnetic case idea from the Milgauss, with a black dial, green seconds hand, yellow crown, and a 3-6-9 layout over a minute track. The 126900, from 2022, keeps the 40mm look but adds crown guards and moves to the 3230 movement with a longer reserve.

The traps: sellers list a 116900 as effectively new-old-stock at a premium, but this reference ran until roughly 2022 and sits in wide supply, so pay accordingly. Watch for swapped hands. A replaced seconds hand on the 116900 kills originality, and the green should read factory-crisp, not painted. On 34mm examples, dial fonts vary by year; mismatched printing suggests a redial.

Check the movement where you can. The 116900 runs the 3131; the 126900 runs the 3230. A caseback that has been over-polished rounds the lug edges, a fast tell that the piece has been through several services.

As a prose lookup: 5500 means vintage 34mm, expect patina and a service history. 114200 means modern 34mm, verify the dial variant. 116900 means the 40mm anti-magnetic era, confirm the green seconds hand is untouched. 126900 means current production, crown guards present, papers likely available.

The reference worth chasing is a clean 116900 with sharp lugs, original hands, and a full set — the last 40mm Air-King before crown guards changed the silhouette.
